Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN)
Feb 5, 2021 – Conference of Jewish Affairs spokesman Rabbi Aryeh Spero made the following statement today:
“The U.S. House of Representatives set a precedent yesterday by voting to deny committee assignments to those congresspersons they deem anti-Semitic. It is important that anti-Semitism not be used as a political weapon against Republicans or conservatives, but also be applied equally to those on the Left and in the Democrat Party who have openly displayed anti-Jewishness and mischaracterized Jewish people and Israel, the Jewish State.
“Accordingly, we at the Conference of Jewish Affairs ask that the same yardstick be used regarding Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar who have while in office over the past two years expressed sentiments that can be clearly characterized as anti-Jewish and negatively stereotypical, and have issued incendiary remarks falsely condemning the Jewish State in ways that are particularly noxious.
“In addition,” Rabbi Spero added, “over the last four years Congresswoman Maxine Waters has said things that threaten conservatives, Republicans and supporters of Donald Trump, and has graphically urged her followers to assault conservative citizens while going about their daily activities, and denying them basic civil rights. She has demonstrated an unfitness to serve on House Committees.
“In a total act of ‘in-your-face’ defiance, Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats have elevated Ilhan Omar to Vice Chair of the House Foreign Affairs subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, and Global Human Rights. Not only has Omar not been reprimanded for her anti-Semitism but also is routinely rewarded by the Democrats for her notoriety. It is obvious that today’s Democrat Party cares nothing about leftwing anti-Semitism and has devalued it by using anti-Semitism as a tool against political opponents. Many are wondering why establishment Jewish organizations remain silent and accept this double standard due to their absolute allegiance to the Democrat Party.”
